5 Ways to Explore the Outdoors in Smoky Mountains National Park
Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure in the great outdoors? Smoky Mountains National Park is full of natural beauty and exciting outdoor activities! Today, I am sharing five of my favorite ways to explore the great outdoors in Smoky Mountains National Park.
About Smoky Mountains National Park
Smoky Mountains National Park is one of America’s most visited parks! So, if you haven’t yet been, be sure to put it on your list of places to visit. Located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, the park is known for its wildlife, waterfalls, and, yes, those majestic smoky mountains. Whether hiking scenic trails, exploring historic sites, or simply enjoying the panoramic views, the Smoky Mountains offer an unforgettable experience for nature lovers!
Stay at LeConte Lodge
Imagine waking up to stunning mountain views, breathing in crisp, fresh air, and surrounded by nature. You can experience all this and more at LeConte Lodge, perched high atop Mount LeConte. This cozy, rustic lodge is accessible only by hiking, making it a perfect getaway for adventure seekers. The lodge has no electricity or modern conveniencesโjust you, the mountains, and a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere.
A stay at LeConte Lodge is special. It’s something I had the opportunity to do as a kid, and I most recently enjoyed a trip with my daughter to celebrate her birthday. You can read about our hike and stay in my post, Alum Cave Trail to LeConte Lodge.
Planning Tip: Reservations are required, and LeConte Lodge books up quickly. You’ll need to plan months in advance. If you are looking for tips on how to snag a reservation, I have a few for you here.
Five different trails lead to the lodge, with the Alum Cave Trail being the most popular due to its manageable distance and beautiful scenery. Be sure to pack lightly, as you’ll need to carry all your hiking supplies.
Hike the Alum Cave Trail
One of the most popular hikes in the park is the Alum Cave Trail. We took this trail on our recent hike and stay at Leconte Location. It’s a fairly challenging trail, especially for hikers who continue on to LeConte Lodge. If you’re only interested in a day hike to Alum Cave Bluffs, you can plan on a 5-mile roundtrip hike. The hike to Leconte is 5.5 miles one way, making the hike to the lodge and back 11 miles.
On your hike, you follow alongside a creek and pass through Arch Rock, a natural archway, before reaching Alum Cave Bluffs. Alum Cave Bluffs is a large, overhanging rock formation that provides a great spot to take a break and soak in the scenery.
Planning Tip: Start your hike early in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a camera to capture the stunning views. Parking for the trail is located off Newfound Gap Road. Plan to arrive early because this is one of the most popular hikes in the park, and the lot fills up quickly.
Conquer Charlie’s Bunion
For those who crave more adventure, the hike to Charlie’s Bunion is a must. This trail offers breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. It’s about an 8-mile round trip from Newfound Gap, making it perfect for more experienced hikers looking for a challenge. The rocky outcrop known as Charlie’s Bunion provides one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the park, making the effort totally worth it.
Planning Tip: Due to its length and elevation gain, this hike is best suited for those in good physical condition. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water and snacks. Mountain weather can change rapidly, so pack layers and be prepared for sudden changes. The trailhead is at Newfound Gap, where you can also find restrooms and parking.
Enjoy Horseback Riding
If hiking isn’t your thing, or you’re looking for a different way to explore, why not try horseback riding? The Smoky Mountains have several stables offering guided horseback rides through scenic trails. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to see the park’s beauty without having to hoof it yourself! You can take in the stunning landscapes and possibly spot some wildlife along the way.
Planning Tip: Check out Smokemont Riding Stables or Cades Cove Riding Stables for guided tours. Rides typically last one to two hours, and no prior riding experience is necessary. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes for comfort and safety. It’s a good idea to call ahead and make reservations, especially during peak tourist season.
Discover Oconaluftee Visitor Center
The Oconaluftee Visitor Center is a great starting point for any adventure in the park. Near the center, you’ll find the Mountain Farm Museum, where you can step back in time and see historic log buildings and demonstrations of traditional farming techniques.
The easy, family-friendly Oconaluftee River Trail starts here and is a great spot for a leisurely walk. Keep an eye out for elk, especially in the mornings and evenings, as they often graze in the fields nearby.
Planning Tip: The Oconaluftee Visitor Center is on U.S. Highway 441 near Cherokee, North Carolina. It’s open year-round and offers restrooms, picnic areas, and a bookstore.

The only cost is a parking fee of $5 per day, $15 per week, or $40 for an annual pass. Be sure to purchase your parking pass in advance online or at one of the kiosks located throughout the park.
