Canyon Overlook Trail, Zion National Park Hike
The Canyon Overlook Trail in Zion National Park is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Utah’s stunning red rock landscapes and witness Zion National Park’s grandeur. Views, views, and more views- all I can say is wow!
Personal Experience
Earlier this year, my daughter Haley and I ventured west for a little mom-daughter weekend hiking adventure in Zion National Park. There are so many exceptional, short and easy Zion National Park hikes, but for some reason, the Canyon Overlook Hiking Trail kept popping up in my research. Canyon Overlook Trail was the last hike of our long weekend getaway, and it did not disappoint. The views were spectacular!
Why Canyon Overlook Trail?
Zion National Park is renowned for its rugged beauty, and the Canyon Overlook Trail meanders along the canyon’s edge, offering jaw-dropping views of Zion. Located at the east entrance of the park, the one-mile Canyon Overlook Trail is perfect for all ages and levels of hikers. Trust me, you can do it!
The Tunnel Experience
Driving through the famous Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel to access the Canyon Overlook trailhead add to the fun of this hike. The tunnel is an architectural marvel in itself, with windows cut into the rock, providing tantalizing glimpses of the scenery beyond. It’s a thrilling precursor to the trail.
Scenic Overlooks
When you reach the end of the out-and-back trail, you’ll find yourself perched on the canyon’s edge, gazing out over Zion. We did not time our visit to enjoy the sunset, although I can only imagine what it would look like. If you can make it work, try to arrive for sunset or sunrise, when the light enhances the dramatic landscape.
Trail Details and Tips
- The trail is approximately 1-mile round trip, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Even though this is an easy hike, I actually slipped, so watch your step. It was bound to happen eventually- I’m a clumsy hiker!
- Bring your camera! Trust me, you’ll want to capture this view.
- Try to arrive for sunrise or sunset for the most beautiful views.
- When you exit the tunnel (if you’re coming from Zion), parking will be on your right. It is a tiny lot, so if it’s full, continue, and you’ll see another parking lot on your left.
- Keep in mind that the trail (and parking lots) can get crowded, so arriving early is always a good idea.
Final Thoughts
Zion has no shortage of incredible hikes with amazing views, but trust me when I tell you that you need to put Canyon Overlook Trail on your list. It’s a short and easy hike that offers a different view of Zion than you’ll get from some of the main trails within the park. Prepare to be enchanted by awe-inspiring views and a camera roll of stunning pics!
