Are you ready to spend the day in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains? Look no further than Black Rock Mountain State Park- Georgia’s highest-altitude park, with an elevation of 3,640 feet. From beautiful views to hiking trails and an abundance of nature, a visit to Black Rock Mountain is a must!

Personal Experience

We recently enjoyed a family day trip & hike at Black Rock Mountain State Park. The leaves were changing colors, and we timed our visit perfectly! I will say, though, I’ve visited in the summer before as well, and honestly, it is just as pretty. After a hike on the Tennessee Rock Trail, we ventured into downtown Clayton for a well-deserved lunch and beer at Universal Joint. It was a perfect fall day!

Black Rock Mountain State Park, A Hidden Gem

I think it is safe to say that Black Rock Mountain State Park is a hidden gem and haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering stunning vistas, lush forests, and diverse wildlife. I have lived in Georgia all of my life and have driven by the signs for Black Rock Mountain on our way to Highlands, North Carolina, countless times, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that we finally visited for the first time.

 Hiking Trails for All Levels

When it comes to hiking, the park offers quite a bit of diversity to accommodate every skill level. My hiking experience has been on the park’s popular Tennessee Rock Trail. A moderate 2.2-mile loop that takes you through dense woods and ends at a rocky outcrop with magnificent panoramic views. Perfect for a half-day adventure! Other trails include the 0.85-mile loop around Black Rock Lake. It’s an easy hike, and the lake’s serene waters offer excellent picnicking spots. And finally, for the hiking enthusiasts, we have the 7.2-mile James E. Edmonds Backcountry Trail. The rugged terrain and distance are a perfect choice for more experienced hikers.

Incredible Overlooks

The real magic of Black Rock Mountain State Park lies in its breathtaking overlooks. Great news! If you aren’t into hiking or don’t have the time for a hike, you can still enjoy awe-inspiring 360-degree views from several lookout locations or from the visitor center located at the top of the mountain.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Escape the Crowds: Black Rock Mountain State Park is popular year-round, with the fall season being exceptionally busy. To escape the crowds, plan to arrive early in the day. It will be much easier to obtain a parking place and you’ll encounter far less people on the trail itself.
  • Pack Essentials: Be sure to bring plenty of water, sturdy footwear, and snacks. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to pack layers, even on a warm day.
  • Check the Season: Black Rock Mountain State Park is beautiful year-round, but fall is an especially popular time to visit due to the colorful foliage.
  • Visitor Center: Swing by the Visitor Center for trail maps, valuable information, and friendly park staff who can provide recommendations based on your interests and fitness level.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful picnic with views or a challenging hike with stunning vistas, this park has it all. With various trails and overlooks, it’s a place where nature truly takes center stage. Plan a day trip and experience the beauty of Black Rock Mountain State Park for yourself!
