Amicalola Falls Trail: North Georgia Hike
Are you ready to embark on a hike that will leave you in awe of Georgia’s natural beauty? Look no further than the Amicalola Falls trail located inside Amicalola Falls State Park, a hidden gem in the heart of the Peach State. The crown jewel of this park is Amicalola Falls, a cascading waterfall plunging an impressive 729 feet! Whether you’re an experienced hiker or need some fresh mountain air, put this waterfall hike on your list!
My Experience
Amicalola Falls is located in Dawsonville, Georgia, and not too far from home, making it an easy day trip. When I started hiking again in my 40s, after a long hiatus, this was one of the first trails we explored, and it did not disappoint. It’s not an incredibly challenging hike, but be forewarned there are quite a few steps as you ascend to the top of the falls.
Diverse Hiking Trails
What I love about Amicalola Falls State Park is that you have a variety of hiking trails to choose from, including the popular Amicalola Falls Loop Trail. This 2.1 mile loop takes you to the base of the falls and offers mesmerizing views. Next, you have the West Ridge Falls Access Trail, a 2.3 mile out and back trail that is more challenging than the Loop Trail. Finally, for those experienced hikers or those who want a longer hike, you have the Springer Mountain Approach Trail. The 8.8-mile approach trail to Springer Mountain, where the Appalachian Trail begins, starts at the park.
Spectacular Scenic Overlooks
The true magic of Amicalola Falls State Park is the mesmerizing viewpoints along the hiking trails. Whether looking at the towering waterfall, exploring the forested ridges, or watching the changing leaves in the fall, the park’s vistas are nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Amicalola Falls Trail, Tips for Your Visit
- Escape the Crowds: Amicalola Falls is a stunning (and popular) waterfall hike in North Georgia. To escape the crowds, you will want to arrive early in the day to visit this popular park, regardless of the season.
- Visit in the Morning: The park gets busier as the day passes, so arriving early ensures a quieter and more peaceful experience.
- Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized. No one likes a hangry hiker! ๐
- Stay Safe: Some trails can be steep and strenuous, so wear appropriate footwear and take your time, especially on slippery surfaces. NEVER attempt to climb on the falls.
- Explore Beyond the Falls: At the top, you will find Amicalola State Park Lodge & Restaurant. Whether you are looking for a bite to eat or for an overnight stay, you have wonderful opportunities to extend your visit.
