Recently, we laced up our hiking boots and braved the rain, ready to tackle the legendary Alum Cave Trail to LeConte Lodge and the summit of Mt. LeConte. It was Haley’s birthday wish- to celebrate her 21st birthday with a fun hiking adventure. Our mom-daughter hikes are becoming a tradition, something I absolutely love! Last year, it was Zion, but this year we kept it closer to home. The hikes are great, but what I enjoy most is the chance to connect, laugh a lot, and make some memories.

Alum Cave Trail to LeConte Lodge

There are several trails to LeConte Lodge and the summit of Mt. LeConte. We chose the Alum Cave Trail, the shortest but steepest hike.

You’ll be captivated when you set foot on the Alum Cave Trail. Even on a rainy spring morning, it was beautiful! This 5.5-mile hike to LeConte Lodge is brimming with natural wonders. Starting at the Alum Cave Bluffs Trailhead, located off Newfound Gap Road, the trail ascends gradually alongside a creek and past Arch Rock โ€“ a stunning natural arch you can walk through.

As you climb higher, the views become more spectacular. You’ll pass Alum Cave Bluff, a massive overhanging cliff that provides a perfect spot for a rest and photos. From here, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, winding through narrow rock faces with the help of cables for support, especially thrilling (and slippery) in wet conditions.

As you continue, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. At this point in the hike, the moment cameโ€”the moment every hiker on Alum Cave Trail experiences at least once. Just as our legs felt like jelly, we encountered two energetic ladies coming down the trail. “You’re almost there!” they said. Spoiler alert: we were not, in fact, almost there, which we also had a good laugh about.

Finally, we reached LeConte Lodge, perched at 6,593 feet. I believe Haley said, “This is epic,” and indeed it is!

Welcome to LeConte Lodge

LeConte Lodge, perched at 6,593 feet on the summit of Mt. LeConte, is the highest guest lodge in the Eastern United States and offers a unique, rustic retreat for hikers. The only way to reach LeConte Lodge is via one of the hiking trails. Established in 1925 by Jack Huff, the lodge consists of cozy cabins and a communal dining room, providing an off-the-grid experience with no electricity or modern amenities. Guests can expect hearty meals, warm hospitality, and breathtaking panoramic views. The lodge operates from March through November, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and serenity of the Smoky Mountains.

LeConte Lodge Reservations

LeConte Lodge is unique โ€“ it’s the only lodging in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it books up fast! Reservations are a must, and trust me, they’re hard to get. They open up on October 1st for the following year, and you need to be quick on the draw โ€“ set those reminders, folks!

Here’s a pro tip: If you don’t snag a reservation right away, don’t despair. We decided to go to LeConte in January, months after reservations opened in October, so we put our names on a waitlist. We chose three dates that would work for us (we picked weekdays instead of weekends). Luckily, they had a cancellation for one of our requested dates.

You can call the reservation office periodically to check for cancellations, but they also post them on X (formerly known as Twitter), so keep an eye out there as well! If you miss the October reservations, add your name to the waitlist.

Persistence pays off, and the reward of staying at LeConte Lodge is more than worth the effort.

Sunrise and Sunset at Mt. LeConte

The staff at LeConte Lodge will share details about the best places to view the sunrise and sunset during your stay. Do this! After a rainy and foggy hike, the clouds broke just in time at Cliff Top to give us the most spectacular sunset!

Practical Hiking Tips

  1. Preparation is Key: Wear sturdy hiking boots, pack layers (the weather can change quickly in the mountains), and bring plenty of water and snacks.
  2. Start Early: The trail can get busy, especially in the warmer months. Starting early helps you avoid crowds and enjoy the trail in peace.
  3. Stay Safe: The trail can be challenging, especially in the upper sections. Take your time, watch your footing, and be mindful of the weather.
  4. Respect Nature: Leave no trace. Pack out all your trash and be considerate of the natural environment.

Alternative Trails to LeConte Lodge

If you’re up for exploring different paths, there are several alternative trails to LeConte Lodge:

  • Rainbow Falls Trail: A 6.7-mile hike featuring the tallest waterfall in the Smokies.
  • Bullhead Trail: This 7.2-mile trail is less crowded and offers serene forest views.
  • Trillium Gap Trail: An 8.9-mile route that passes through the picturesque Grotto Falls.

Each trail has its own unique charm, so you can choose based on your hiking preference and experience level.
