Are you a frequent traveler or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes at the hotels? Before I began writing, I had a career in hotel communications, working closely with hotels. And even though I considered myself to be a seasoned traveler, going behind the scenes was an eye-opening experience. I thought it would be fun to take you behind the scenes and share a few surprising secrets I learned working with hotels.

The Magic of Hospitality

The most important lesson I learned is that the heart of the hotel industry is hospitality. Behind the scenes, countless individuals work tirelessly to create memorable guest experiences. From housekeeping to the front desk to the hotel manager, everyone plays a role in creating a positive guest experience.

Those Pesky Check-In and Check-Out Times

Have you ever wondered why hotels have strict check-in and check-out times? So many times, we’ve arrived early at our hotel only to be told we would need to wait until check-in. Back then, I didn’t understand, but now I do. It’s not just to inconvenience you; it’s for their logistical and operational reasons. Housekeeping needs time to prepare rooms for new guests after the previous ones check out. They have a few hours to clean and turn over countless rooms. Check-in and check-out times ensure a smooth transition between guests, making everyone’s stay as comfortable as possible.

Voice Concerns While on Property

When staying at a hotel, you should voice your concerns while on the property. It can be a game-changer! Hotels genuinely want to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Speaking up about any issues or concerns, whether it’s a noisy neighbor, a malfunctioning appliance, or a special request, allows them to address the problem swiftly. When I worked with hotels, it was disappointing to read a negative review from a guest when the issue could have been easily remedied during the stay. Remember, hotels are in the business of hospitality, so speak up and allow them to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

The Influence of Online Reviews

Speaking of reviews- Online reviews profoundly impact a hotel’s reputation. Hoteliers are acutely aware of this fact and take guest feedback seriously- hiring, firing, bonuses, etc. can all hinge on reviews. Positive reviews can boost a hotel’s image, while negative ones can be detrimental. So, next time you leave a review, remember that your words can shape the future experiences of other travelers and the hotel itself.

The Art of Housekeeping

We all appreciate a clean and tidy hotel room, but I was amazed by the meticulous attention to detail that goes into housekeeping. Housekeepers have a set standard for cleaning each room, from the top of the door frame to the bottom of the bathroom floor to the folded towels and crisp bedsheets- not to mention they are the hardest workers I’ve ever met. Be sure to share a kind word or compliment their service when they get it right- you’ll make their day.

Big Brand Hotels Are Often Individually Owned

It might surprise you that many big brand hotels are individually owned and operated! I know it surprised me! While hotels carry the familiar name and standards of the hotel chain, each location is a unique establishment run by local entrepreneurs or, more often, a hotel management group- that oversees all hotel operations. So, the next time you check into a big-brand hotel, remember that you’re not just experiencing a global chain; you’re immersing yourself in the hospitality and character of the local community, making each stay a little unique!

Join the Loyalty Program

Finally, join the Loyalty Program. Most hotel chains have a loyalty program you can join for free, and I encourage you to do so- regardless of how much you travel. As a loyalty member, you may have access to perks like room upgrades, late check-out, and even discounts. Our hotels consistently tried to go over and beyond to treat our loyal members with special care, so join a program. Signing up for these programs is often free and can significantly impact your overall experience.

My time working closely with hotels was an enlightening experience that gave me a newfound appreciation for the industry- especially for the hard workers behind the scenes. A lot goes into creating an exceptional experience for guests. The next time you check into a hotel, take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into making your stay memorable. Happy travels!
