Killarney National Park, located in southwestern Ireland, near the town of Killarney, County Kerry, offers visitors a variety of things to do and see.

What I love is its proximity to the town of Killarney. We spent three days in Killarney, visiting the National Park each day, either by walking, biking, horse-drawn jaunting car, or a short ride from town. Every day was a new adventure.

As someone who loves the outdoors, I loved our entire Ireland trip, but I especially loved our time spent in Killarney. If you’re planning an Ireland getaway, here are six of my favorite things to do in Killarney National Park.

Visit Ross Castle

Ross Castle, nestled on the banks of Lough Leane within Killarney National Park, is a scenic stop steeped in history and local legend. The castle was built in the late 15th century by Irish chieftain O’Donoghue, who is rumored to still sleep in the lake’s depths. Every seven years in May, O’Donoghue rises to circle the lake on a white horse. As the legend goes, if you catch a glimpse of O’Donoghue, you are assured of good fortune for the rest of your life.

6 Things to do in Killarney National Park

Take in Ladies View

Situated high atop a mountain within Killarney National Park is Ladies View, a scenic overlook on the Ring of Kerry. Named for Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting, who enjoyed the view, this is a great stop to take a few pictures or grab a bite to eat at the cafe across the street, which features a rooftop terrace.

Hike Torc Waterfall

Torc Waterfall is an idyllic setting and waterfall hike located within the National park. The hike begins with moss-covered trees and rocks, which add to the magical feel. We hiked up to the waterfall and back. However, there is a 4.5km loop hike to enjoy as well.

Smell the Roses at Killarney House and Gardens

A gateway into the National Park, Killarney House and Gardens are an easy walk from downtown Killarney. The house offers tours, but the garden steals the show! Vast and meticulously designed gardens showcase an array of eye-popping colors.

Explore the Muckross Abbey Ruins

Founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary and damaged and rebuilt throughout its history, much of Muckross Abbey remains intact. Read about its history, view the dramatic courtyard showcasing a large tree, and explore the grounds and graveyard. And bring your camera, the short walk from the parking lot to the abbey, through the flower-covered fields, with the Muckross Abbey in distant view, is a moment to capture.

Tour the Muckross House

The main attraction in Killarney National Park is Muckross House, a grand victorian manor built in 1843. Explore the outside of the house, garden, and grounds for free. Guided tours of the estate itself are available at a nominal price. While we enjoyed exploring the grounds and learning about its history, we opted to pass on the tour and avoid the crowds.

Finally, here are a few tips and things to know to help you make the most out of your Killarney National park visit:

  • Bring your camera and take lots of pictures- trust me!
  • There is no cost to enter the park, but tours do charge.
  • Ireland’s weather can be cold and rainy, so bring proper clothes.
  • While some paths are paved, others are not- so bring appropriate footwear.
  • Jaunting cars and bikes can be rented in the town of Killarney
